When Joe Dawson sent Duncan MacLeod to meet one of the Watchers' researchers, ("Methos"), he didn't know that Adam Pierson would turn out to have been keeping a secret of his own. The chief researcher on the Methos Chronicles was... Methos himself. At first uncertain of Methos' motives, MacLeod soon learnt that he was not one to take unnecessary risks and that he survived by avoiding trouble as far as he could, but he wasn't afraid to face danger to help Duncan overcome the effects of the Dark Quickening, ("Deliverance"). He also had a romantic side, as befits a man married an alleged 68 times, as was shown in "Timeless", when he met and fell in love with Alexa Bond. In an effort to save her from the disease that was killing her, Methos was prepared to risk both friendships and his cover as a Watcher to obtain the Methuselah Stone, ("Methuselah's Gift"), but was thwarted, leaving him to mourn her after too brief a time.
If Adam Pierson's secret was that he was Methos, then Methos' secret was his past. The philosophical Immortal's dark past caught up with him when he was forced to reunite with Kronos against MacLeod as Kronos sought to rebuild the Four Horsemen, ("Comes A Horseman" and "Revelation 6:8"), but both the Highlander and Kronos underestimated the wily Methos' ability to survive. Even though Duncan's reaction to Methos' past strained their relationship, Methos could not bring himself to abandon MacLeod, but in the aftermath of Duncan's seeming breakdown and the death of Richie, ("Archangel"), vanished from Paris. A year later, he reappeared in Paris, only to be confronted by Morgan Walker, ("Indiscretions"), who thought he knew the man he had a score to settle with. With Walker dead, Methos renewed his friendship with Duncan MacLeod, saving the Highlander from sacrificing himself, ("To Be""), and finally getting his friend to accept that, in the end, you have to accept who you are, live, grow stronger, and fight another day, ("Not To Be").
